When I say I run on Dunkin’, I’m not talking about coffee. Sure, I love Dunkin hot coffee but there’s more to this place than taking care of your caffeine fix. For a long time now I’ve been a fan of their donuts and if you’ve read some of the articles in my blog, you know this to be true. Besides, why pay for gourmet doughnuts at some pricey restaurant when you can get an oldie but goodie for just $12 a dozen?
But for people who might not frequent Dunkin’ as much as I do, or if you are not a donut connoisseur, you might be surprised to know that the brand has 22 classic donuts and as many as 90 donut options on the menu. Yep, you read that right. Dunkin’ has all sorts of donut flavors to suit anyone’s tastebuds.
On the one hand, the more options the better right? But on the other hand, the numerous options can leave you overwhelmed and confused as to which donuts to get.
Let me tell you this right now, not all Dunkin’ donuts are created equally. Some are great, others meh.
So if you need help with choosing the best donuts at Dunkin, don’t worry, I’ve done all the hard work (lol!) tasting all the classic donuts at their store so you don’t have to. Here’s how they rank from best to worst:
Boston Kreme
Full disclosure: the Boston Kreme is my favorite donut so I may be a bit partial here. In any case, this donut is a heavenly chocolate and cream combination that’s loved globally. The custard filling resembles vanilla pudding and the balance of chocolate frosting to dough is just… perfect.
Jelly
People generally fall into two camps: those who prefer powdered jelly donuts and those who like sugared ones. I’m in the powdered camp while my husband prefers sugared donuts. However, we both agree that Dunkin’s sugared jelly donuts have the ideal jelly-to-donut ratio.
Glazed
The classic glazed donut is always a good choice. It’s never too sweet or too dense. Dunkin’s version is slightly chewy with a glaze that melts in your mouth. My only gripe is that I never get them fresh out of the oven L
Chocolate Glazed
Dunkin’s chocolate glazed cake donut is basically a large chocolate munchkin. I’d argue it’s the perfect donut, especially for chocolate lovers. Pro tip: Try refrigerating it. The cool crunch of the icing paired with the fluffy chocolate center is a game-changer.
Old-Fashioned
The old-fashioned donut is also my go-to when I want something simple without all the extra frills. It pairs perfectly with a cup of coffee or tea for dunking. It’s like a dense piece of cake without icing but still full of flavor. While some might find it boring (my husband included), sometimes simplicity is best.
Chocolate Frosted with Sprinkles
A chocolate frosted donut with sprinkles is always a safe bet IMHO. It’s not too fancy or over-the-top and yet it’s still delicious. The sprinkles add a fun factor with their color and crunch so it’s a win win.
Powdered
Powdered donuts are like giant powdered Munchkins. They’re very dense cakes that are thickly coated in powdered sugar. Taste-wise, it’s a 10 for me, unfortunately they are dry and messy, so you’ll want a cup of coffee, tea, or milk nearby (and plenty of napkins).
Sugared
Light, sweet, and incredibly fluffy, sugared donuts won’t leave you feeling overwhelmed by sugar. It has just the right amount of sweetness to satisfy your craving without going overboard. It’s not the most exciting donut, but it tastes great and does the job so it’s all good.
Vanilla Frosted with Sprinkles
People tend to prefer either chocolate or vanilla frosting. I enjoy both – depending on my mood. However, vanilla frosted is much, much sweeter than its chocolate counterpart so that’s something you ought to consider.
Blueberry Glazed
Although I enjoy Dunkin’s blueberry glazed cake donut, it lacks a strong fruity flavor. It doesn’t overwhelm my taste buds, which I appreciate, but I wouldn’t mind if they added more blueberry chunks to enhance the berry flavor.
Strawberry Frosted Donut
As a kid, I always wanted a strawberry frosted donut. These days, it’s a pass for me. While it’s one of Dunkin’s most visually appealing donuts with its vibrant pink icing and rainbow sprinkles, the taste no longer impresses me like it used to.
Oreo Donut
If you love Oreo cookies, you’ll probably enjoy this one. It’s topped with chocolate cookie crumbles over vanilla icing and filled with vanilla cream that tastes like Oreo’s filling, but gooey. So why is it rated lower on my list? It’s extremely sweet, overwhelmingly sweet in fact.
