To be very honest, however, it’s not that hard to tweak the pizza. You can pretty much add any ingredient as a topping, so you can really tailor-fit it to your preferences. This makes it quite difficult to make groundbreaking changes in the recipe. Not a lot of folks thought of tweaking the dough recipe, however, which is where Hungry Howie’s found its niche.

With most folks focused on their toppings to give their pizzas the edge it needs to come out on top, Hungry Howie’s took a whole different direction and added various flavors to their crust. It definitely helped put the chain on the map and even start a trend.

History

Looking at Hungry Howie’s prices, it’s easy to see how and where they started. When they first opened in Taylor, Michigan in 1973, they were a very small pizza place that mostly thrived on deliveries. Due to their proximity to the local high school, they soon became a popular hang-out.

Soon enough, the owner, James Hearn, and his delivery guy, Steve Jackson, decided to partner up and franchise their operation. Within three years, they were able to open 65 locations and their growth continued. Today, they have 55o stores in 21 states. Not bad for what used to be a high school hang out.

What’s more impressive about Hungry Howie’s is that the growth is as organic as it can be. It wasn’t acquired by a more experienced company so the fact that it grew to its size today is actually a great feat.

What They’re Famous For

Being a pizza chain, it should be expected that Hungry Howie’s is known for its pizza. It has always been a reliable carry out and delivery joint and is quite possibly a household name in the cities and towns that have a branch or two.

However, since it is touted as the “Home of Flavored Crust Pizza, these items are also quite possibly the most talked-about entries on their menu.
