About Silver Diner
Every Silver Diner restaurant, after all, is characterized by its warm and welcoming atmosphere, thanks to the friendliness of its staff, as well as the three-meals-a-day menu. Here, you and your family and friends will find a home away from home! The family-friendly Silver Diner prices make it such an inviting place for your spontaneous gatherings, too.
History
Robert Giaimo and Ype Von Hengst, the co-founders of the Silver Diner chain, wanted to open a restaurant that becomes a bridge between a fast-food joint and a tablecloth restaurant. They decided that a diner, an American cultural icon in its own right, was the perfect idea. They then decided to visit as many as 500 diners across the United States to get a feel of what makes them so appealing to customers despite the presence of everything from casual eateries to fine dining restaurants.
In 1989, the duo opened their first Silver Diner in Rockville, Maryland and it soon became a huge success. Today, it’s among the busiest restaurants in the chain as well as one of the most profitable with annual sales reaching more than $6 million.
The chain consists of more than 15 restaurants in Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey. Its corporate headquarters are in Rockville, Maryland.
What They’re Famous For
The Silver Diner chain has evolved since its establishment more than 25 years ago but it has retained several of the elements that made it successful in the first place. These included the hand-spun milkshakes, the late-night menu that rightly includes breakfast items, and the casual family-friendly ambiance. But it has also offered dishes and desserts that reflect the contemporary lifestyle, a marriage between the old and the new that serves it well.
Why Eat Here
Every Silver Diner restaurant has a suburban look and feel about it; in contrast, its upscale sister brand, Silver, has a more urban ambiance. The suburban ambiance encourages a more casual approach to dining out without making compromises on the quality of the food and service.
The comfortable and cozy booths can sit small groups of people, an ideal arrangement when you want to enjoy good company without overcrowding. The interiors are designed with nostalgia in mind but with contemporary sensibilities to invite the younger crowd inside its doors. The facilities and amenities are well-maintained so every spot looks spotless, a must when you’re dining out.
Of course, the heart of every classic diner is its people – friendly, personable and warm people, to be exact, who make customers feel welcome every time they come. The customer service is efficient obviously with food and drink orders being delivered within a few minutes but it’s the friendly service that makes Silver Chain stand out from the competition.
The menu is just as attractive, and it isn’t surprising as one of its co-founders, Ype Von Hengst, is a professional chef. The Chef Ype’s Selections are arguably the most popular because all the dishes are delicious.
The Avocado Toast is scrumptious appetizer with avocado mix, hemp hearts, and micro-greens on a sourdough bread; smoked salmon can be added and the sourdough bread substituted with gluten-free toast for an extra charge. The Mediterranean lamb meatballs is served over garlic spinach, feat and roasted pepper sauce and drizzled with tahini harissa yogurt. The Organic Chickpea Hummus, a gluten-free appetizer, is a savory combo of tahini, kalamata olives, smoked paprika, and tomatoes with naan bread and micro-greens.
The entrées come in a large platter suitable for sharing, if you can. The Koch’s Farm Free-Range Turkey Platter fills the tummy with its turkey over sourdough toast and served with mashed potatoes, fresh vegetables, and rosemary sage gravy and cranberry ginger sauce. The Chicken Tender Platter is lip-smacking good, proof of Chef Ype’s creativity as it’s his own recipe, with its organic chicken, coleslaw, crispy fries or vegetables, and honey mustard.
We love the Bell & Evans Roasted Chicken Pot Pie because of its comfort food quality, as well as for its savory mix of mushrooms, roasted squash, and corn with a flaky buttery crust. There’s also the Black Angus Meatloaf, a half-pound slice of meat heaven served with crispy onion straws, mashed potatoes, and fresh vegetables.
The salads and soups are great as meals on their own, if you’re watching your calorie intake. These include the Mediterranean Greek salad, chopped Cobb salad, and warm roasted local vegetable salad.
No American diner will be complete without the burgers and sandwiches. At the Silver Diner, these are as creative as can be without going too far from the beloved burger – meatless, miso burger, lamb merguez burger, and bacon bleu burger are on the menu.
No matter what time the munchies hit you – breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and late night – come to Silver Diner and satisfy your cravings!
