About Whataburger
The Whataburger chain of fast-food restaurants wants to change the common notion that fast-food hamburgers and cheeseburgers are bland and boring. We have to say that it’s succeeding!
History
Paul Burton and Harmon Dobson opened their first Whataburger restaurant in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1950. Today, the chain consists of more than 800 restaurants across the southwestern and southeastern United States; it’s considered as a regional chain due to its limited geographic scope. The Dobson family is the current owner and operator of the company; many of the restaurants are franchised.
What They’re Famous For
Aside from the Whataburger logo (i.e., the Flying W), the brand is easily recognizable through its distinctive A-frame buildings with orange-and-white striped roofs. The buildings are easily seen from the road, an attraction in some places.
Of course, Whataburger is also known for its delicious hamburgers that are considered a step above the typical hamburgers in fast-food joints. There are several choices, too, including the Whataburger, the Whataburger Jr., and the Justaburger.
Why Eat Here
Many Whataburger restaurants are open 24/7. If you’re the type whose cravings for midnight snacks consist of fast-food fare, then you’re likely to hit your neighborhood Whataburger on a regular basis.
There’s nothing pretentious in Whataburger restaurants and it’s among the reasons for its enduring popularity even with the presence of fast-food giants. The tile floors are kept clean, the simple tables and chairs are well-maintained, and the counter has bright lighting and colourful menu boards. The orange and white color scheme in most Whataburger restaurants contribute to the casual, family-friendly, and welcoming vibe.
The Whataburger hamburgers and cheeseburgers are large so much so that you will need two hands to hold them to your mouth. Unlike its competitors, particularly McDonald’s and White Castle, Whataburger likes to go big on its burgers, from the huge patties to the 5-inch buns. You can’t say that you were left unsatisfied because the burgers were smaller than your tummy can hold.
Yet another way that Whataburger distinguishes itself from its competition is by cooking the burgers to order and delivering them to the customers’ tables. There’s a waiting time but it’s worth it considering that you’re being served freshly-cooked burger instead of a limp and lame burger preheated in the microwave.
You will observe the significant difference between a Whataburger burger and another fast-food burger as soon as you take the first bite. You will love it that the burger patty still feels warm, if not nearly hot, from the griddle while the bun provided the perfect backdrop for it.
We also love the Whataburger patty melt, a delectable sandwich consisting of two patties. It’s more substantial – and meatier, too, for that matter – due to the double patties, the grilled onions, and the thick slice of Monterey Jack cheese. Its unique creamy pepper sauce accentuates the delicious flavors of the beef patty, onions and cheese, not to mention that it’s definitely a step up from the countless versions of the Thousand Island dressing most burger chains peddle as their unique creation.
The Whataburger burger is also available in double and triple patties. While it doesn’t seem like it, adding one or more patties into a regular burger can improve it, if only for the meatier flavor.
The burgers can be paired with sides as well as shakes and malts. Don’t worry as these aren’t super-sized – at least, not in the same way that the Whataburger burgers are! You can choose from three sizes, namely, small, medium and large; the large sides should be enough to fill your large appetite when these are paired with the triple-patty burger.
We love the Whataburger onion rings and, in fact, highly recommend them over the French fries although these are good, too. The onion rings are tasty, crispy and crunchy, as well as solid enough to hold their shape when still in your fingers.
Whataburger also has local offerings including signature double burgers, such as the AI Steak Sauce burger. There’s the Chop House, a burger with cheese, bacon and house steak sauce, available only in Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. The Green Chile Cheeseburger, which is only available in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona, has a spicier flavor profile; try the jalapeno burger, too, if you’re into spicy food.
The chain also offers several breakfast sandwiches, which we recommend because of their excellent taste, and rich, creamy shakes. There’s also the option of adding toppings to your burger; examples include avocado, mustard, pickles, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and jalapeños (i.e., customized burgers or, as the chain calls it in its slogan, “just like you like it”).
