History
In 1964, Stuart Anderson opened the first Black Angus restaurant. Many corporate changes followed including Saga’s acquisition of the company in 1972, Marriott’s purchase of Saga in 1987, and the sale of several of the restaurants to the American Restaurant Group in the same year. By 2001, the chain had 103 restaurants in 13 states but by 2004, signs of trouble started appearing, such as the decrease in the number of restaurants to 93 in 2004. The American Restaurant Group declared the Black Angus Steakhouse as bankrupt in the same year, which was followed by the declaration of bankruptcy of the parent company in January 2009. By March 2009, Versa Capital Management purchased the Black Angus Steakhouse and managed it to its current state of 45 locations, most (30) of which are in California.
What They’re Famous For
Black Angus restaurants are known for their juicy, succulent and tender Black Angus steaks. According to the company, the beef is aged a minimum of 24 days to ensure optimum depth of flavor, tenderness of bite, and succulent quality of the meat. The raw beef is cut by hand to get the freshest and tastiest portions before being grilled over an open flame while the cooked steaks are brushed with butter for extra richness. You cannot go wrong no matter your choice in steaks, be it filet mignon, New York strip, rib-eye, top sirloin, or prime rib. You should also look at the delectable array of seafood dishes including fried shrimp, grilled prawns, and lobster tails as well as salmon, salads, and chicken dishes.
