History
In 1993, Parasole Restaurant Holdings, Inc. opened the first Buca di Beppo restaurant in Minneapolis. By 1996, however, the 5-restaurant operation was spun off to become Buca, Inc., which started trading on NASDAQ by 1999 with 20 locations on its roster. While the chain enjoyed growth in its first few years, trouble was not far behind – business losses soon mounted, several restaurants were closed, and the company was investigated for possible securities fraud, among others. In August 2008, Planet Hollywood International purchased Buca and thereafter became its wholly-owned subsidiary. Today, the chain consist of 92 restaurants with 87 company-owned in the United States and 5 franchisee-operated locations in the United Kingdom.
What They’re Famous For
Buca Di Beppo restaurants are known for their wide range of delicious Italian-American dishes and desserts. Many of the food can be sampled before ordering – just ask for a special table, usually across from the restaurant’s main kitchen, where the waiters and chefs will allow it. Most, if not all, of the locations also have vintage photographs artfully arranged throughout the restaurant while the restrooms have a unique feature – recorded ambient sounds of people conversing in Italian. The dishes, desserts and drinks are served a la carte, in a family style, to allow for sharing among the diners although several locations also offer individual-sized portions as part of their lunch menu.
Why Eat Here
Keep in mind that eating at Buca Di Beppo is not just eating but an enjoyable dining experience for the following reasons:
- Delicious food and drinks that may be on the expensive side for many dishes but are worth every dollar, thanks to the great presentation and flavorful quality.
- Generous portions of the dishes, which are meant to be shared among a group of diners so sharing the bill is also less of a hassle. Every table also gets a complimentary bread with olive oil-balsamic vinegar dip, which can be your appetizer (i.e., to prepare your palate for the entrée or to assuage your hunger while waiting for your order).
- Smaller portions, known as Buca Mia, are also available for people who want to sample the dishes, for couples on a date, and for two persons only. The Buca Di Beppo prices for Buca Mia are more affordable, too, in comparison with the family-style dishes.
