About Furrs
The transition from cafeteria-style dining to buffet-style dining that Furr’s has made in recent years isn’t surprising. Furr’s Fresh Buffet, also known as Furr’s Family Dining and Furr’s Cafeteria, is a chain of family restaurants with locations in New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
History
Roy and Key Furr opened the first Furr’s in Hobbs, New Mexico in 1946. By the next year, its Odessa, Texas location opened.
In 1980, Kmart Corp. purchased Furr’s. By 1988, Kmart also sold it to Michael Levenson’s Limited National Partnership. In 2000, its new name, Furr’s Restaurant Group, was established but just three years later, it declared bankruptcy. By 2014, the company was sold to Food Management Partners, a San Antonio-based company.
What They’re Famous For
Every Furr’s restaurant is known for its wide selection of food and drinks on the buffet table, a veritable feast that groups including families and friends enjoy. But this isn’t just a buffet restaurant because the chain also prides itself on a warm welcome, almost like a homecoming, for its diners, aside from the home-style fare.
Why Eat Here
The restaurants offer several comfort foods that will satisfy even the most nostalgic diner. Many say that the fare even reminds them of their mothers or grandmother’s cooking! But nostalgia aside, the dishes and desserts are surprisingly delicious considering the reputation of buffets as places where bland food can be found.
There’s usually something that will satisfy your appetite from the wide range of food and beverages on offer at the buffet stations. The Furr’s prices are reasonable overall, too, so getting your fill will not burn a hole through your wallet. The trick is in getting only what you can eat at first and, if necessary, coming back for second helpings.
The protein-rich fare consists of fish dishes, such as the baked Alaskan white fish, baked Creole whitefish, blackened chicken with wild rice, and blackened tilapia with spicy pineapple salsa. The fried chicken breast has a crispy exterior while the chopped steak has been charbroiled and topped with mushrooms. The glazed meatloaf is popular because of its home-style flavors with distinct Creole notes, thanks to the sauce.
What’s an American buffet restaurant without pizza? Furr’s restaurants usually offer two types of pizzas – first, cheese pizza with a delicious marinara sauce and cheese overload; and second, pepperoni pizza with plenty of pepperonis and mozzarella cheese. While these pizzas aren’t anything to write home about, these are still good enough to eat.
Yet another staple of the American diet on the menu is burgers including sandwiches. You can customize their burgers and sandwiches by choosing from a nice selection of meats, vegetables and other toppings. You may also just order from the menu so that you can enjoy the American staple taken to a delicious level.
Even salads can be made-to-order with ingredients like crisp mixed greens, vegetables, and meats, as well as several salad dressings and toppings. Your salad creations can be as classic or as quirky as you want – and the staff will not raise an eyebrow. But there are already pre-mixed salads on the menu – Caesar salad with crisp romaine lettuce, croutons, and parmesan cheese; California peaches and bananas; and cranberry chicken salad – so that you don’t rack your head for new combos.
The seafood pasta salad is among the bestsellers, thanks to the filling quality of the spiral pasta, fresh chopped cucumbers, and mild seafood. Even gelatin finds its way into the salads, such as in the pineapple lime delight.
The steaks, fried chicken, and fish dishes can be made more complete with breads. Your choices include Southern-style cornbread muffins, fresh yeast rolls, and garlic toast in the style Texans love. Your meal should end with one or two of the scrumptious desserts like the chocolate pudding, banana nut ice box pie, and buttery cheese pie.
Most diners have said that the Furr’s service is among the most efficient in the industry. You and your group should be able to get your orders within 15 minutes or so, although the wait can be longer during peak hours. You will probably find the wait staff to be attentive to your dining needs, courteous even to the kids, and fast on their feet.
The Furr’s buffet style of dining may not exactly be the gourmet dining experience in a 5-star restaurant. But when you consider the overall delicious quality of the food, the efficient service, and the casual ambiance, you will come back for another shot. The cleanliness of the facilities, ample parking space, and accessibility are pluses, too.
