About Harvester

The Harvester Restaurants cater to the demand for casual dining with a waiter service segment among the Brits. The family-friendly, farmhouse-style chain offers its diners delicious burgers, salads, and entrees, as well as a limited selection of desserts.

History

In July 1995, the Harvester chain was bought by Bass for £165 million with plans for its rebranding. By 2000, Six Continents managed the chain until 2003; Six Continents was a renamed company.

When Six Continents divested its chain of hotels in April 2003, Mitchells & Butlers took over the chain. By then, there were already 127 outlets, which grew to 200 locations across the United Kingdom by 2012. As of December 2015, the chain consisted of more than 230 locations.

What They’re Famous For

The Harvester chain is known for its spit-roasted chicken, which has been praised for its succulent, flavorful and tender quality, as well as for its flame-grilled food and help-yourself salad carts.

Why Eat Here

All Harvester restaurants have a family-friendly atmosphere so it’s no surprise that families (i.e., parents with their children) are usually seen enjoying their food and drinks from Mondays to Sundays. The efficient waiter service ensure that the orders are delivered as fast as possible to the tables, thus, lessening the possible tantrums by young children who can’t seem to sit still. The servers are also friendly, helpful and attentive so the adult diners can enjoy their meals, with or without kids in the group.

In keeping with the family-friendly atmosphere, the casual dress code and casual ambiance reinforces the relaxed vibe across the restaurant. Just make sure that everybody in your group is suitably dressed – these aren’t beaches but restaurants – for casual dining, be it for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Even during peak hours, usually lunchtime, the average noise level can be tolerated, especially when you’re a regular patron of casual dining and fast-food restaurants. The underlying buzz is proof that the Harvester restaurant is a popular one so your palates in good hands, so to speak. The television screens across the restaurant provide entertainment, too, although there’s no Wi-Fi connection, which can be a boon or bane depending on your Internet dependence level.

The full bar provides guests with a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from beers and wines to cocktails and spirits. This may seem like a counterintuitive move for a family-friendly restaurant but it makes sense on several grounds. The adults will likely need a drink or two to deal with the kids and to enjoy their meals (i.e., food-and-drink pairing, such as grilled meat and beer).

The young guests (i.e., children) will also find the children’s menu to be right up their alley. There are two choices – Bigger Appetite and Smaller Bite – so both the parents and kids can decide which size best suits their appetites. Each order from the children’s menu already includes a drink, a dessert, and unlimited servings of salad, as well as the opportunity to make your own chocolate pizza.

The main menu is already bursting with choices including burgers, salads and entrees like the famous spit-roasted chicken, a bestseller in Harvester restaurants because of its delectable flavors from the skin to the meat itself. The portions are generous so sharing may be possible between two persons depending on their appetites.

In case you’re watching your daily calorie intake, you will find the nutritional information placed beside the food items as helpful in your health goals. But keep in mind that the rich dishes and desserts on the menu will probably result in overshooting your target daily calorie intake – sharing will be necessary.

We liked the Butternut Squash and Chickpea Burger for its unique flavor profile, thanks to the use of the unconventional vegetables in a burger. You can swap the chips, too, in favor of the sweet potato fries without paying extra. You also have the Mixed Grill if you’re into grilled foods for which the chain is famous for.

The desserts, which are limited in number, are must-haves, nonetheless. The choices include Rocky Horror, sundae with fudge brownies, chocolate fudge, and vanilla ice cream, and Cookies N Cream with Oreo, a vanilla ice cream treat with Oreo biscuit crumbs.  The servings are huge, too, so sugar rush is likely.

The Harvester chain may be in the United Kingdom but it’s safe to say that the food and drinks are rooted in American cuisine, particularly Middle America. There are quintessentially British fare so the menu becomes more balanced.  Most of the menu items feature the budget-friendly Harvester prices.
