Brief History
In 1979, Bob Stupak’s World Famous Million-Dollar Historic Gambling Museum and Casino opened north of the Las Vegas Strip. But the casino was destroyed in a fire two months after its opening. The owner, Bob Stupak, subsequently opened Vegas World, a hotel and casino, on the same site within the same year.
The present-day Stratosphere Las Vegas opened on April 30, 1996. But its owner, Stratosphere Corporation, filed bankruptcy shortly after the opening, an opportunity to seize control that Carl Icahn grabbed with both hands.
By October 2017, however, Golden Entertainment purchased the Stratosphere when it sealed the deal on its purchase of American Casino & Entertainment Properties.
What They Are Famous For
The Stratosphere Tower has put the hotel and casino resort on the map, so to speak, for good reason. This isn’t just beautiful in its design but it’s also notable for being the tallest structure in the State of Nevada and Las Vegas, as well as the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States. The tower has two observation decks, four thrill rides (i.e., Big Shot, Insanity, SkyJump, and X-Scream, most of which are in the top five of the world’s highest thrill rides), and a restaurant, Top of the World.
There are also Stratosphere Tower Shops, a connecting area between the entrance of the Stratosphere Tower and the casino. The shops sell a wide range of merchandise including souvenirs, aside from the art gallery and comedy club on the same floor.
Why Eat Here
The Buffet at the Stratosphere provides the ultimate Las Vegas buffet dining experience – or at least, that’s what the management says. Then again, when you start appreciating the wide selection of delicious food and drinks, the efficient service, and the casual vibe, you will agree with the management. Most guests agree that, indeed, the Stratosphere’s buffet provides great choices for a good price, even an affordable price with the use of Ace Play card.
Unlike many buffets off the Strip, the Stratosphere offers a brunch buffet Monday through Friday; prices for kids and adults vary. The dinner buffet is available every day but Saturdays and Sundays are special – guests can enjoy bottomless refills on champagne. The restaurant is a favorite among locals and tourists for special celebrations, family gatherings, and daily feasts before or after your day.
The food stations are standard in Las Vegas but The Buffet at Stratosphere differentiates itself from the rest of the pack with excellent food choices, both in quantity and quality. The wait for tables isn’t long even when there’s a good crowd, thanks to the efficiency of the wait staff and the spacious dining area with plenty of tables.
As soon as you’re seated, one of the servers will greet your group and take your drink orders. There are the usual beverages like orange juice, tea and coffee, as well as fountain drinks like Coke and Dr Pepper for brunch, lunch and dinner. The alcoholic options, such as local and imported beers and mixed drinks in cans, are available after paying for them at the cashier’s register.
The food offerings at The Buffet in Stratosphere are from several global cuisines, from Pan-Asia and Mexico to Italian and other European countries. There are plenty of pastas and pizzas, fish and meat including pork, beef and chicken dishes, and vegetable dishes alongside noodles, salads, and sausages. The buffet may not be the best in Las Vegas but it’s definitely among the best in terms of the diversity and quality of the food.
The brunch selection is worthy of a separate mention because it’s just so good! The choices include eggs in various permutations from sunny side up to eggs Benedict; crispy and thin bacon; sumptuous French toast; fluffy pancakes and waffles; and doughnuts and maple bars. The mix of American and Mexican breakfast items make it among the most diverse, too, so locals and tourists will find something to their liking.
The wait staff at the buffet restaurant are attentive to the needs of guests without hovering about. Your glasses will be refilled promptly and your plates filled with generous amounts of food.
The restaurant’s décor is the no-frills style but it has a casual and dynamic vibe so the simplicity can be overlooked. The tables are large while the booths provide privacy, a combination that allows large groups to enjoy their meals here.
